Teravana’s Community Garden: Two Months In

By Michael Collins, Teravana

Teravana’s community garden is celebrating its two-month anniversary. Team Teravana has been dropping off fresh produce at the Cazadero General Store and directly to community members. Over 400 lbs of produce have already been distributed!

Guided by indigenous permaculture principles, reintroducing native habitat plant species specific to Cazadero and not using techniques like tillage, the garden is growing organic foods that will support healthy bodies and minds.

The garden was established under the shade and protection of a large black oak, a keystone species here at Teravana. All plantings are done with the guidance of the oak.

What’s to come:

  • With continued support from our donors and with permission of the land: more garden spaces, wild-harvested foods, and establishment of an orchard
  • Distribution of produce in Cazadero and more West Sonoma County communities
  • Collaboration with a vibrant community of grazing cooperatives; enabling forest succession and soil health; providing clean meat and protein from the land
  • The garden will protect soil health and benefit forests and waterways of the area. With chickens on the way, Teravana is seeing to it that those working the land and friends have access to healthy food.
